Anole lizards as pets

Anole lizards, sometimes called American chameleons or simply anoles, make an excellent choice for pets. They do not require a lot of space and are easy to care for. Anoles are an especially good choice for people who may have pet allergies or who are unable to exercise with their pets.

Native to the southeastern United States, these small reptiles are fascinating to watch. They will literally change color before your eyes and have unique little personalities. Normally shy creatures, most will come to know their owner’s voice and rest happily in your fingers and hands.

How to buy an anole

You’ll find these live reptiles for sale at most large pet centers. They usually cost less than ten dollars.

You can buy one or more than one, as long as you have a large size terrarium. We recommend at least a 20 gallon terrarium, preferably larger. They are a solitary species that carve out their own territory in the wild, so don’t feel the need to buy more than one to keep each other company.

Look for a live, active lizard that appears to be a healthy weight and temperament. Males are slightly larger than females and may have more skin under their throats, commonly known as a dewlap.

The main precaution is not to house two males together. They will be enemies and they will fight, and one will inevitably be afraid and in a bad mood. Females housed together will not be a problem.

Take your pet home

The journey home will be one of the most stressful times in an anole’s life. Be sure not to add other errands. Take your pet straight home and have their terrarium all set up and ready to go.

If you buy your pet in the winter, make sure your vehicle is adequately heated. The pet store will probably place the lizard in a large plastic airbag, secured at the top. Take them straight home and gently deposit them in their new terrarium.

Don’t be alarmed if he runs around frantically for the first few minutes. This is stressful for them, but they will soon calm down and start exploring more leisurely. We recommend gently misting the inside of the terrarium just before they go inside, in case they get thirsty. They will lick water droplets off the twigs, twigs, and rocks you used to decorate their home.

Feed your pet after a few hours. By this time they will be somewhat acclimated to their environment. Don’t worry if you don’t eat right away. It may take a day or two to adjust and get comfortable.

Resume

Anole lizards make great pets, so get them off to a good start. Choose a healthy specimen that appears robust and active. Bring them right home from the pet store and have your terrarium ready to go ahead of time. Finally, give him time to adjust to his new surroundings and feel completely comfortable with his new home.
