Buying used auto parts is usually an inexpensive alternative to buying new auto parts from your local auto parts dealer or online store. It may take some time and creativity to find the exact part, so be patient as there are many different ways to achieve this. But they fall into three basic approaches: junkyards, classifieds, and online stores. Let’s take a look at each one.

Scrap yards

Usually there is a part of the city where most of the salvage depots are located. These yards often sell used car parts at low prices if you can remove the necessary part from one of your wrecked cars or trucks yourself. And you will need your own tools. Every junkyard is different, so be flexible and be prepared to negotiate, as you may be able to purchase complete sets, as well as a number of parts. Call ahead for pricing and auto / parts availability. Lastly, you should check the terms and conditions of the sale and any return policy. Not everything goes according to plan.

Classified ads

Traditionally, used auto parts can be found in the classifieds section of your local newspaper or grocery store brochure / publication. Today, you can add eBay, Craigslist, and a few more websites to this category. Depending on the part, the buyer will need to verify that the current condition will not affect their ability to operate properly, as most of these sellers (with the exception of eBay) are anonymous to the buyer. Which means you have no history of your relationship with previous buyers. If you use eBay, be sure to check the seller’s comment ratings before purchasing any used auto parts. Buyer feedback ratings can provide you with information about a seller’s reputation, reliability, and sales history. And return policy.

Online stores

This newer method can be a very quick and convenient way to locate and purchase a specific auto part. Prices, descriptions, images, and expanded details are often available through a searchable database. Make sure to get creative when entering your search keywords so that the search engine will bring you the results you are looking for. The more exact the keyword match, the better the results.

In today’s market, there are many options for buyers of used auto parts. Old school and new. With a little effort, the exact part for your car will be available.
