Today’s teens are not interested in the same collection of stamps and coins. Teens want to collect something interesting, fun, and cool to show their friends. To do this, teens must be creative. Collections can focus on a certain thing, like scoreboards, or a certain topic, like a specific baseball team. One of the reasons collecting has remained popular throughout the generation is that it is a versatile hobby. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the different cool things teens can collect.

Markers

Although this may seem like a collection only for teenagers who enjoy reading, bookmarks can be both decorative and practical. A collection of markers can be attached to a padded corkboard or placed in decorated frames. There is a wide variety of different types of markers on the market; commemorative, keepsake, inspirational writing and printed images. Markers are also available in various materials, from leather to cardboard and plastic to cotton. Therefore, markers offer a lifetime opportunity to collect with little chance to get bored.

Keychains

Keychains, like bookmarks, can be simply collected as a decorative collection. I say this because when I was young I used to collect keychains and I thought it would be great to carry my entire collection of sixties key chains. I soon ended up with shoulder and neck pain due to the ridiculous weight I was carrying all day, every day. That said, collecting keychains can be a lot of fun, especially since companies started selling keychains with clever (and sometimes funny) phrases. It is important to discuss with your teen what you consider appropriate and inappropriate when it comes to keychain sayings, as some of the keychains include sexual or drug-related themes.

Thematic articles

By thematic elements I mean collecting things that follow a basic idea. For example, fantasy objects such as medieval clothing, pewter figures of wizards and dragons, posters of old English castles are all collectibles for a fantasy collector. Other popular topics include sports teams, butterflies or dragonflies, animals, and celebrity items. The thing to remember about collecting thematic items is that they often become part of the adolescent’s identity. Teens immerse themselves in the topic; using it, decorating your rooms with it, even playing PC games or watching movies and TV shows that involve the theme. Don’t worry if it seems like your teenager is exaggerating (as long as he’s not stealing or hurting himself in some way), as he will most likely jump from topic to topic as he matures. It is vitally important that teens adopt some kind of hobby. Hobbies keep teens busy and out of trouble while giving them a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Collecting is a great hobby for teens because almost any teenager can find something that they would like to collect. Best of all, finding items to add to your collection can be a bonding experience for your teen and family. What more could a parent and a teenager ask for?
