Modern approach to interior design

In today’s world, we look for ways to make things easier; we seek that perfect marriage between simplicity and beauty. Basically, this is how modern design can best be described. Give up the unnecessary and gravitate toward a simpler art and style.

Modern interior design began at the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany in 1919, by a group of European designers and architects. This new age design grew out of the school’s philosophy of combining form and function in design. They eliminated the superfluous and focused on functionality through simple forms. It was also around this time that they began to use industrial materials such as metal and glass to create furniture, such as tables.

Modern interior design is characterized by sleek, clean lines and a clean look. It is a stark contrast to the traditional ones that emphasize more intricate shapes and ornate ornaments. You don’t see much happening in a space, but you don’t leave the style element out of the picture.

The color palettes in modern interior design are more than neutral tones, such as brown, black, white or beige, and the occasional reds. It creates a kind of subdued mood that creates a perfect background for key pieces or furniture to gain more attention.

The types of furniture used in modern designs are also in dark wood tones or plain, stark colors, creating an air of sophistication and class. There are no little figurines lining the shelves or colorful ornaments adorning every nook and cranny. Instead, just use a few key pieces for accentuation. It is true to the saying that less is more.

Modern design architecture can be distinguished through angular lines, geometric shapes, and polished surfaces. Good lighting (both natural and artificial) is also necessary to show the shapes and grooves that give character to a space.

Much of the inspiration for modern design came from the sense of Japanese style. If you went to a Japanese house or restaurant, you would see that it is a far cry from Spanish settings or old American designs. They only make use of key furniture, while the surroundings remain clear in order to maintain enough space for easy movement. You can see here that they use what is called functional design. Without deviating from style, they only wear what is necessary.

Modern interior design is also confused with contemporary design. What most people don’t know is that the two are different. A contemporary style in design is more of the trendy looks that are “in” right now, while modern interior design is the overall clean and geometric style of the design. A modern interior design can be part of a contemporary style.

Today, most homeowners, especially in urban and suburban locations, go for that clean, streamlined look. They want less mess, as well as less and easier cleanup, keeping their on-the-go lifestyle in mind. Modern interior design has definitely created that perfect combination of style and function, which is perfect for the modern individual.
