How can a house be too big? We have loads of things that need a home, a desire for space so we can move around without tripping, and maybe a sense of pride in having a big house.

A home is too large when the ratio of people to animals and the square footage of the home is thrown out of balance. What is that ratio can be felt by being in a house that is too large, and will have some degree of variation according to one’s personality.

However, it is safe to say that a house that houses a couple and a dog, for example, and that exceeds 3,000 square feet is touching the edge of a person-space imbalance.

The imbalance is energetic: a house is inanimate or, in human terms, dead. Furniture, clothing, artwork, carpet, and mechanical systems in a home are also inanimate. We are animated, or we are alive, and equally important, we are social animals.

When we are in an environment where there are more dead things than living things, as in the house that is too big, we lose energy for the house … as in the house that is too big, we lose energy for the house. We can feel its emptiness, a loneliness, the feeling that something is missing, and we often make up for it by encouraging it with things that make us feel good. The effect of adding inanimate things is to feel an initial charm that makes us feel that we are receiving energy, for example, the happiness that one feels when adding a beautiful new table. However, that excitement wears off pretty quickly and we’re left with another energy deficit.

Dangers in relationships

Aside from feeling emptiness and a lack of containment from being in too big a house, there are serious negative consequences for an intimate relationship. Unless such a house is used regularly to entertain or house large numbers of people, the lack of life and the vastness of the space become metaphors for the state of the relationship. The house will often end up requiring a lot of time / money to maintain one or both, taking time / money from the relationship; the house stands between the couple. Energetically, as mentioned above, each person is being depleted by the lack of life in the house and has less energy for the partner.

Solutions

What to do if you have a house that is too big? Well, moving is the best solution, but in the meantime, add live things to it like animals or plants. Let the outside in by keeping the windows unlocked and the views open to the outside, especially if you are viewing nature. If the temperature permits, open the windows to invite in the sounds and smells of the lively world of the great outdoors. Use photographs or works of art that speak with images of live things, preferably in motion, for example someone skiing, walking, etc.

We instinctively know how to add life to a dead space and that is why we have so many televisions and music sources in a house. Television or music constantly add live action to the space. But there is no substitute for the real: living people, animals and plants.
