Rats can be nervous little creatures, so it takes a lot of time and patience to tame rats. They will need time to get used to their new environment and to you too. Their noses will wiggle and they will spend time investigating their cage, crawling and climbing, or just lounging on their beds.

Your rat will take a while to get used to the sights and smells of your home, be patient and allow it to settle over time. During this period it is a good idea to verbally introduce yourself to your rat every time you approach the cage, call him by his name or nickname in a soft tone, this will help him realize that you are his food source. and water and a friend who will do no harm or hurt.

After a couple of days, you can put a small piece of food in the palm of your hand during feeding time and allow the rat to come up to you to say hello and find out what you are offering, so make sure your treat is one of his favorite foods!

Once he gets used to you, your smell and your voice, he will become more friendly and will climb on your hand during the treatment time. Once you’ve done this a couple of times, you can gradually pull your hand out, with the rat riding on it. This will give you a chance to talk and pet your rat, it will fidget and most likely try to climb up your arm, this is great, watch it carefully and let it explore you!

Training by giving treats as a reward is a very effective method; you will be able to tempt him back to you so that you can put him back in his cage. It’s not uncommon for rats to respond to their name and come back to you when called!
